Background of the Study
Career development refers to the structured efforts to provide employees with opportunities to grow within an organization, enhancing their skills, advancing their knowledge, and preparing them for higher roles (Nwachukwu & Chukwu, 2023). It includes activities such as training, mentorship, job rotation, and professional development programs. The effectiveness of career development programs is crucial for enhancing employee commitment, which refers to the level of dedication an employee shows toward their organization, including their willingness to stay and contribute to its success (Dagnachew & Feysel, 2023).
In organizations like Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, a leading food processing company, career development is an integral component of the human resource management strategy. Flour Mills has made substantial investments in career development programs to ensure that employees are motivated and have clear growth trajectories within the company. However, the relationship between career development and employee commitment in the context of Flour Mills, particularly in Benue State, remains inadequately explored.
This study seeks to examine the relationship between career development opportunities and employee commitment at Flour Mills, evaluating whether providing career growth prospects translates to increased levels of employee dedication, job satisfaction, and organizational loyalty. The research will also explore the long-term effects of career development programs on employee retention.
Statement of the Problem
Despite Flour Mills' considerable investments in career development programs, there is a gap in understanding how these initiatives affect employee commitment. While career development is expected to lead to higher employee retention, job satisfaction, and organizational loyalty, there is limited empirical evidence on how these outcomes manifest specifically in the Benue State branch of Flour Mills. This study aims to bridge this gap by exploring the direct and indirect impacts of career development on employee commitment and identifying factors that may enhance the effectiveness of such programs.
